WHAT IS STOKESAY WARE?
Stokesay Ware is a range of miniature dolls house
china which is inspired by the past and reflects the rich history of the
English china makers. It is hand made from authentic materials using
traditional techniques in the internationally recognised dolls house scale of
one twelfth life size (or 1 inch=1 foot).

HOW IS STOKESAY WARE MADE?
Exactly like full sized china. Traditional
patterns and classic designs from the 18th and 19th centuries are meticulously
drawn in minute detail using the same techniques and materials. The bone china
clay is glazed and fired at temperatures ranging from 1060 to 1200 degrees
centigrade. The decoration of coloured enamels and 22k gold luster is
permanently fired on in the kiln, often necessitating as many as six separate
firings to complete each piece. Stokesay Ware is made using our own range of
finely detailed and accurately scaled moulds. The artwork for our patterns is
also our original work and is exclusive to Stokesay Ware.

DO YOU USE DECALS?
No. Decals are ordinary
prints (such as you could make with your computer printer) which are printed
onto a clear or opaque white plastic sheet which is in turn attached to
waterslide paper. They are cheap to produce and are used extensively in the
model aeroplane and railway hobbies and are no more permanent than a printed
magazine page. Our decoration is made using
specially drawn artwork and hand printed by silk screen using specialist
onglaze enamels which are coloured with metal oxides. These colours can
withstand being fired in the kiln to temperatures exceeding 800 degrees
centigrade and are permanent.

IS THERE ONE SPECIAL
SCALE? Yes. The scale of one twelfth life
size (also referred to as '1 inch=1 foot' or 'twelfth scale') has been adopted
internationally as the industry standard. The vast majority of modern
miniatures, both manufactured and craftsman made, are in this scale.
However, you may hear the phrase 'related scales' mentioned. This refers to
derivatives of twelfth scale. '1/2 inch=1 foot' is also referred to as 'half
scale' and '1/4 inch=1 foot' as 'quarter scale'. Many dolls houses
manufactured in the early part of the 20th century were made in the scale of
one sixteenth. If you are not sure what scale your house is, a rough rule
of thumb is to measure the height of the door openings. In one twelfth scale
they will be in the region of 6 inches high and around 41/2 inches in a one
sixteenth house.

WHY ARE YOU CALLED STOKESAY
WARE? Stokesay is a tiny village near
Ludlow in Shropshire. It is famous for Stokesay Castle, a magnificent fortified
manor house completed in 1291. Karen has very close connections as her parents
were born locally and married in the Norman church attached to Stokesay Castle
and Karen was later christened there.
