FROM THE LONDON STUDIO OF STOKESAY WARE
A NEW WASH SET

  Page 3
Having had a classic training, Karen is deeply influenced by the work of the great English factories - Minton, Spode, Doulton, Coalport, Wedgwood and Derby. She feels no one could hope for a finer heritage. Karen's work so far has consisted largely of miniature interpretations of traditional full sized patterns where she takes an original design, distills its essence and character and finally adapts it to one twelfth of its original size. She works from archive pattern books and catalogues and frequently draws from her own full sized collection to which she continually adds. Karen will often buy a piece of china in order to take comprehensive measurements and gain understanding of how it was made. However, as she pointed out, mathematical miniaturising does not always work as shapes often have to be adjusted for the miniature scale model.

Stokesay Ware designs reflect Karen's own tastes. She would find it difficult to create a piece in miniature if she would not be happy to own it in full size. Having her own dolls' house helps give her a clearer picture of items to make. Following the recent Sotheby's sale of contents of Stokesay Court in Shropshire and the successful bidding of Karen and Peter for the historic monogrammed 'Stokesay Service' the formidable team are planning a Stokesay Ware service in miniature. It is anticipated that the miniature dinner service in the distinctive pattern of cobalt blue and gold and monogrammed with the collector's family initial will take a few years to develop. An heirloom in the making.

Karen and Peter are active members of the International Guild of Miniature Artisans (I.G.M.A.). Karen achieved her I.G.M.A. Artisan Status two and a half years ago and has exhibited at the prestigious show and sale in New York City in the past. Peter is the European contact for anyone wishing to become a member of The Guild. They are also members of MinTA, the Miniaturists Trade Association in England. Karen is currently Chairman of this organisation.
