STEP THREE Build the
mantelpiece.

 A
close up of the mitred end of the top shelf.
|
1. Cut a shelf (A) for the top measuring 20 mm x 136 mm. (We used
a piece of wood with a moulding along one side so we mitred the corners and
stuck them with PVA glue. When this was dry we sanded the shelf perfectly
flat).
2. Cut the following lengths of wood
from 2 mm thick strips:
· 1 length (B) 14 mm x 90 mm to form the central
span · 2 lengths (C) 14 mm x 136 mm
for the uprights · 2 lengths (D) 14
mm x 20 mm to form the base of the uprights · 2 pieces of tiny moulding (E) 14 mm
long · 2 brackets (F) 10 mm wide cut
from a length of coving
|
|

|
|
|
3. Glue the 2 shorter pieces to the base of the uprights and add a
tiny piece of moulding to the join. Glue the central piece into position and
glue the shelf above. Glue in the decorative brackets.
